I have a F & W pistol with the markings on top of the barrel: Forehand Arms Co Woroestef Mass. U.S.A.Pat Jan 11, Nov 29 '87, Jan 3 '88. The pistol grip looks like black plastic and the serial number on the bottom of the grip reads: 316449. I was thinking of giving it to the police this coming Saturday in exchange for a gift card. The company was producing small arms from 1890 until 1902. Previously from 1871 until 1890, it was the Forehand & Wadsworth Company. This particular.38 S&W pistol has a patent dated Dec. 7 1886 & Jan. 11, 1887 stamped on the frame along with Forehand Arms Company. The serial number is 287202 which is stamped on the butt. F&W age/serial number ID. To make a long history short. Firm became Forehand & Wadsworth in 1871, in 1890 the names was changed to Forehand Arms Company ( Mr. Wadsworth retired ), In 1902 The company was taken over by Hopkins and Allen. Was probably made between 1871 until 1898. They weren't too concerned about record keeping in those. Firm started as Allen & Thurber in 1842-47 then from 1847-56 as Allen, Thurber & Co. From 1856 to 1863 as Allen & Wheelock and from 1863-71 as E. Forehand & Wadsworth grew out of E. Allen and operated from 1871-1890 when it became Forehand Arms Co. Condition, the manufacture, and model are usually the most important guidelines used in determining the value of any modern fiream. The Forehand Arms Co. ( origanally as Forehand and Wadsworth) was in busness from the early 1870's until acquired by Hopkins & Allen sometime after the middle 1890's. Your firearm was made sometime after 1892 when the name was changed. In order to determine value the condition of the firearm has to be known. My guess, though, is that unless it is in very good condition the value is such that it would best be used as a decoration in the den. The actual value of a gun can change drastically depending on the condition, proven provenance, rarity, and the current market demand. Demand is constantly changing, which means the value is constantly changing. The condition would include the finish and mechanical wear. Even in rough condition, a g un with proven provenance could still be quite valuable. Modern Gun Values or the Gun Trader's Guide are both good sources of information.
